While conventional handheld Raman instruments have improved raw material verification processes for many pharmaceutical drug manufacturing facilities, complex raw materials still pose significant challenges. Common complex materials—like polysorbates, solvents, and stearates—often require time-consuming and quality-compromising sampling procedures due to their remarkable spectral similarity and the challenging containers in which they’re received. Especially when received at high volumes, this prevents efficient raw material verification and can often cause bottlenecks in release to production and waste, as well as risk to raw material quality.

Soleil Grise is Product Manager for Handheld Raman Identification products at Agilent Technologies. Soleil leads the product development and commercialization of spatially offset Raman spectroscopy-based solutions, particularly for verifying raw materials at reception. She joined Agilent Technologies in 2022 and has a background in scientific instruments designed for biopharmaceutical development.

Chris Welsby is an Applications Development Engineer supporting the Handheld Raman Identification Products and also the company’s Transmission Raman product for content uniformity measurement. He has quite a varied remit, including collaboration with R&D to investigate potential hardware and software enhancements, developing applications and composing application notes, providing technical support to customers, and assisting with pre-sales evaluation. Chris joined Cobalt Light Systems at the start of 2016 and transferred to Agilent Technologies when Agilent acquired Cobalt in late 2017.
