Honeywell Conference Centers on Using IIoT in Process Operations

Enabling industrial companies to employ the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to address ongoing operational challenges is the focus of Honeywell Process Solutions’ (HPS) 42nd annual Honeywell Users Group (HUG) for the Americas, HPS said in a June 19, 2017 press release. “Challenges facing manufacturers and plant operators today have not dramatically changed in the last 40 years. Safety, efficiency, reliability, productivity, and security continue to drive innovation across industries,” said Vimal Kapur, president of HPS. “What has changed is our ability to better address these challenges. Today, we are able to leverage the power of the Internet to employ a broader range of data to transform operations. At Honeywell, we call it the power of connected and specifically for HPS customers, it is Honeywell Connected Plant.”

Honeywell’s newest industrial automation technology, Experion Elevate-real-time supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) delivered as a secure and scalable service-, reduces the need for on-site hardware and support, the company announced in a June 20, 2017 press release. Today’s industrial organizations seek to leverage operational expenditures over capital expenditures wherever possible, reducing the concern of purchase, installation, hosting, and maintenance of hardware and software on premises, according to the press release. Small- to mid-sized companies may have limited capital, but want long-term use of the SCADA solution as well as flexibility in deployment, service and support, and upgrades they may not otherwise pay for.

Data integrity and security are crucial for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Honeywell Trace documentation and change management software reduces configuration errors, improves troubleshooting, reduces unplanned shutdowns, and improves auditing and regulatory compliance. Honeywell’s Secure Media Exchange (SMX) reduces cyber security risk and operational disruption by monitoring, protecting, and logging use of removable media such as USBs. Enterprise Risk Manager provides cross-plant cyber risk visibility across all site risk managers, providing a solution that measures and manages high priority industrial cyber risk.

On June 8, 2017, HPS announced that it will establish a new industrial cyber security center of excellence (COE) for Asia Pacific in Singapore. The center will feature a cyber security research and development lab, an advanced training facility, and a security operations center that provides managed security services. “Honeywell’s major investments in new industrial cyber security technologies, services, and advanced research-including this new center of excellence in Singapore-will further strengthen our ability to secure and protect industrial assets, operations, and people,” said Jeff Zindel, vice-president and general manager, Honeywell Industrial Cyber Security, in the press release. “The COE will provide a world-class innovation platform for smart industry, critical infrastructure protection, and securing the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in the Asia Pacific region.” The facility will also deliver managed industrial cyber security services to help users reduce the risk of security breaches and proactively improve their security posture. Managed services include continuous security and performance monitoring and alerting, security asset management, and incident response. The center is expected to open by the end of 2017.
