Minnesota-based Trelleborg Medical Solutions is announcing some of the products for biopharmaceutical applications it will be exhibiting at INTERPHEX 2025, to be held from April 1–3, 2025 in New York City (1).
In a Feb. 23, 2025 press release, Trelleborg said its BioPharmaPro portfolio, which includes single-use equipment such as tubing and custom-molded parts, as well as advanced composite materials used for chromatography columns, would be showcased (1).
“The combination of polymer materials expertise, advanced manufacturing processes, innovative engineering and quality assurance provided through BioPharmaPro enables us to provide unsurpassed support to accelerate the business of our biopharmaceutical customers,” Florance Veronelli, sales manager of LifeScience Solutions, a division within Trelleborg, said in the press release (1).
Trelleborg acknowledged that single-use systems (SUSs), as used in the biopharmaceutical space, may be thought of as counter-intuitive, but can actually be less environmentally damaging than reusable systems (1). SUSs promote sustainability, according to the company, by cutting out the need for both chemicals and more natural resources—water and energy, for instance—that are needed for the “harsh sterilization” required for reusable systems.
“Single-use systems represent the future in biopharmaceutical processing of therapeutic drugs, with significant advantages over traditional reusable stainless-steel systems,” Mike Urbanski, strategic account manager for LifeScience Solutions, said in the release. “Our lightweight, tight-toleranced, non-reactive BioPharmaPro advanced composite columns are designed to replace stainless steel or acrylic multi-use columns. Produced with polypropylene thermoplastics, the raw materials can be recycled after use, offering a more sustainable solution ... Trelleborg’s BioPharmaPro adds value for customers through our one-stop shop for complete integrated solutions, from simple products to complex assemblies, allowing system suppliers to focus on drug development while outsourcing the product engineering and consolidating their supply chain.
In addition to their apparent environmental advantages, single-use technologies are among those driving innovation in the industry at the moment, as Cynthia A. Challener detailed in the January/February 2025 issue of Pharmaceutical Technology® (2).
“Fortunately, the biopharmaceutical industry is, although conservative, also highly innovative, with constant investment in new technologies geared to improving productivity and quality while reducing risk and cost,” Challener wrote. She cited Patrick Meyer, global head of business development and alliance management at Rentschler Biopharma, in his estimation that single-use bioreactors are among the notable examples of these newer concepts (2).
Bringing single-use devices from concept to commercial launch is also part of the portfolio of a major award winner early in 2025, Pharmapack’s first-ever Woman of the Year, Asmita Khanolkar, senior director, Combination Products, Drug Delivery, Sterile Manufacturing, Device/Pharma Strategy and Commercialization, at US-based SMC Ltd. (3). Pharmapack Europe announced that and other awards on Jan. 22, 2025.
Trelleborg will be exhibiting at Booth 2158 at INTERPHEX.
