The disposable FibraStage cell culture system from New Brunswick Scientific (www.nbsc.com/b8.htm) is available in two models. Both the original system and the new model, which contains a pump module for continuous exchange of media, enable researchers to simplify production of mg quantities of proteins, virus, or cell mass from anchorage-dependent or suspension cultures. The FibraStage system consists of 500–mL disposable bottles pre-filled with FibraCel disks, and a solid-support matrix, providing a shear-free environment and high-surface area for cell growth. Gas exchange and media mixing are handled by placing the bottles in the FibraStage module, which alternately compresses and expands the bottles, forcing media through the disk bed.
